YOU ARE portrays a grand piano in a concert situation. an object of wealth, of desire, of culture, for a musician a workhorse, an academic reference. in the tension between its great artistic aura and the thought of a possible physicality of its own, locked up in a concert hall and haunted by the hands to which it is subjected, the film navigates through four different pieces of music by the baroque composer jean-philip rameau and the minimalist philip glass.
we looked at the format of the solo piano concerto from a new perspective. as an instrument that is often taken for granted, we wanted to find new ways of approaching the piano. we wanted to set this expensive, heavy and yet fragile instrument in motion, to give it a physical character. as a musician who, whether consciously or unconsciously, always performs a physical task and does not just fulfil a mechanical function in order to make the music sound as good as possible. as a listener, to find new perspectives on an instrument and a repertoire that the classical audience is so used to hearing.
more than an illustrative aestheticisation, YOU ARE remains true to the scenic framework of a small chamber piano concert.
